Ex-Government Minister O'Rourke Hails Decrease in Irish Abortions : 9th Apr 09

Ex-Government Minister O'Rourke Hails Decrease in Irish Abortions

For years the Irish State ignored the number of women going to England for abortions, Government backbencher and former Fianna Fáil minister Mary O’Rourke told the Dáil (main house of Parliament) recently. “There has been a recorded decrease of 30 percent in the number of women travelling from Ireland to Britain for an abortion and a 20 percent fall in the number of births to teenagers, a significant achievement”,’ Mrs O’Rourke stated.

“We all love to thump our chests and claim we disagree with abortion, and most political parties do not agree with it, but for many years we turned a blind eye to the number of women travelling to Britain for an abortion”. She also said it was “not correct’’ that young people didn’t know, or learn in education classes, how to conduct a relationship properly. “In such classes they can be alerted to the fact that just because one wants to keep up with one’s peers does not mean one has to have easy sex with whatever guy crosses one’s path’’, she explained.

She praised the work of the Crisis Pregnancy Agency, which had, she said, helped reduce the number of women journeying abroad for abortions. Mrs O’Rourke spoke during the debate on the Health (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill, which Minister of State for Health Maire Hoctor introduced.

F&L Comment: We, too, welcome the decrease in Irish abortions, but it’s important to recognise that, contrary to what Mrs O’Rourke said, the CPA did not in fact help reduce the number of women travelling to England for abortions. It was the incessant work and determination to protect unborn human lives of the pro-life movement in Ireland, which helped lower the number of women going abroad for abortions.

The CPA itself is a part of the problem, particularly in light of its well-known pro-abortion stance. The Irish Times. April 3. F& L. April 9.
