RCN Surveying Nurses’ Views on Assisted Suicide : 18th May 09
The Royal College of Nursing (RCN) in the UK is conducting an extensive consultation among its members to learn their attitudes towards assisted suicide. The RCN says this hotly debated issue is one that affects all sections of the population. There have been multiple attempts to legalise assisted suicide in the UK.
The RCN is seeking opinions from country and regional boards, branches, forums and individuals in a move to support and encourage a comprehensive internal debate. It encourages nurses to share their views through their relevant branches and boards before 22 May, when the consultation process will close.
According to Patricia Brophy on the "Nursing Times" Website, “Human life is the most important possession a human has. Dying naturally is part of life. Assisting life when it is near its end in a loving and caring way is the only acceptable way to allow people to die. We cannot allow a minority or even a majority to die, even if it be their dying wish, before their natural end.
If this was allowed to be the case then assisted suicide may be imposed on others when it was not wanted, due to the diminished value placed on life nearing its end.
Caring for the elderly, infirm and gravely ill in a way we would like our nearest and dearest and ourselves to be cared for will take resources both human and material, training and finance, yet it will be money, equipment and human resources well spent. If we under-fund life, we could of course spend more on debate, but then not everyone will have a voice because they may be no longer with us”. Nursing Times. May 4/5.
