German Parliament Votes to Tighten Abortion Law: Mothers to Learn Abortion’s... : 25th May 09
German women seeking abortions late in pregnancy will have to undergo a consideration period of at least three days before a physician can make a final decision, the Bundestag has decided. In the vote, 326 delegates voted for the consultation period, which includes a psychological evaluation by a doctor. Out of the 612 parliamentarians who voted, 234 voted against it and 52 abstained.
Parliamentarians also voted for increased consultations and support for couples with handicapped children who are contemplating abortion. Abortionists kill some 600 late-term babies in Germany every year.
The measure aims to reduce this number by requiring mothers to get counselling from a doctor about the physical and mental dangers of aborting a late-term baby. The doctor should also inform the mother about living with a physically or mentally disabled child, and point her towards other means of support. In addition, the new law also imposes a €10,000 ($14,400) fine on doctors who do not properly advise mothers. After approval by the Bundesrat, the upper chamber of parliament, the measure should go into effect in January, 2010. DW World DE. May 14.
F&L Comment: This new German law is a sign of a society increasingly ill at ease with the horror of abortion. It shows how the evil effects of an abortion law can be gradually limited to help protect unborn babies and their mothers, even if it is not possible, for now, to get rid of it entirely. It is particularly welcome that the law attempts to ensure that women receive the support necessary to help them raise their children.
