Protecting Unborn Babies’ Lives is Violence Against Women, Says UN Body : 22nd Jun 09

A report by the UN’s Human Rights Council in Geneva is taking criticism for promoting an alleged right to abortion. The report, 15 years of the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Violence Against Women, its causes and consequences (1994-2009) a critical review, came under fire from delegates from the Holy See, Pakistan and Egypt.

The diplomats said the document tries to link the need to eliminate violence against women with other agendas, such as creating so-called rights to abortion and sexual orientation, as well as directly attacking the family.

The report says, “The legal framework on the right to sexual and reproductive health has been summarized by the Special Rapporteur on the Right to Health as comprising, on one hand, freedom from violence and discrimination, and on the other, entitlements to reproductive health...”

It goes on to demand access to so-called safe, legal, accessible abortions. It sees this as an entitlement, with the State being responsible for providing the necessary “services”.

The document also sets out categories of violations related to so-called reproductive rights, one of which it identifies as violence occurring directly or indirectly as a result of State action/inaction on so-called reproductive health policy. It alleges that criminal sanctions by a State against all forms of killings of unborn babies violate “reproductive rights”. ELN. June 12.
