Ireland’s Birth, Marriage Rates on the Rise : 29th Jun 09

Ireland’s Birth, Marriage Rates on the Rise

Nearly 19,000 births were registered in Ireland during the third quarter of 2008, 33 percent of them to unmarried parents, according to new figures. The total was 18,792 births for the quarter, an increase of just over one percent compared to the same period a year earlier, but significantly lower than the level of increase in recent quarters.

During the second quarter of last year, for example, the annual increase was 11 percent. But the number of births registered during the third quarter of 2008 was 36 percent higher than the same quarter in 1999, when just 13,840 babies were registered.

These figures appear in the Central Statistics Office’s Vital Statistics Third Quarter 2008 report.

Galway City and Cork City recorded the lowest birth rate, just 13.1 per 1,000 people, while County Meath boasted the highest: 22.2 per 1,000. Of the 18,792 births in the third quarter of last year, 42 percent were to first-time mothers, and just under one third to second-time mothers.

The average age of mothers having their first child was 28.8. During the same quarter, 6,829 deaths were registered, for an annual death rate of 6.2 per 1,000. Among those aged 65 and over, the annual death rate was 43.3 per 1,000.

More than a third of all deaths were due to circulatory diseases, 31 percent to malignant neoplasms and 10 percent to respiratory diseases. 73 infant deaths were recorded during the quarter.

There were 8,765 marriages registered during the period, traditionally the most popular quarter to ‘tie the knot’ in. This marks a 19 percent increase on the third quarter of 1999, when 7,342 marriages were registered.

The estimated population of the Irish Republic at the end of April 2008 was 4,422,100, and Northern Ireland’s was about 1.76m. The Irish Times. June 17.
