EU Bishops Note Influence of Pro-Life Guarantees in Ireland’s YES Vote on Lisbon

The Commission of the Bishops’ Conferences of the European Community (COMECE) has issued a statement on the “clear and decisive outcome” of the Irish referendum vote to accept the Lisbon Treaty.

The COMECE statement—released by Bishop Adrianus Van Luyn of Rotterdam, the group’s president—attributed Ireland’s approval of the treaty at least in part to the “guarantees” that the Irish had received that “the right to life, the protection of family, and the right of parents to educate their children” would be protected.

The prelates also voiced hopes for an “open, transparent, and regular” dialogue between religious leaders and EU institutions. COMECE was formed to provide a united voice for the Catholic bishops’ conferences of the member states of the European Union (EU). Catholic Culture. COMECE. October 5.
