Spanish Drug Agency Confirms Morning-After Pill’s Grave Dangers to Women : 4th Feb 10

The Spanish Agency for Drugs and Health Care Products, which is under the Ministry of Health, recently reported that serious physical side effects result from using the “morning-after pill” (MAP), e.g., life-threatening ectopic pregnancies and deep-vein thrombosis (DVT).

According to the newspaper La Razon, the agency’s new research contradicts previous reports from the Ministry of Health that said the drug was safe for use. It argues that the MAP can cause DVT, in which a potentially fatal blood clot forms in a vein deep inside the body.

The new report comes almost four months after the government approved the distribution of the MAP without a prescription, enabling young women to get it from pharmacies. No regulations are in place to prevent excessive use. The side effects presented in the report speak for themselves: Of the 1,379 women who took at least one dose, 426 reported bleeding (30.89 per cent); 189 nausea (13.7 per cent); 184 fatigue (13.34 per cent); 183 abdominal pain (13.27 per cent); and 142 headaches (10.3 per cent), among other problems such as breast pain, vomiting, diarrhea and dizziness.

The results of the study were published last October, seven months after the government announced it’d allow dispensing of the MAP without a prescription. Experts questioned why the study of the drug’s dangers wasn’t done before the government changed its status. Was CAN. January 19.
