Irish Government Poised to Legalise Embryo-Killing? : 24th Jun 10

Irish Government Poised to Legalise Embryo-Killing?

Sources have indicated to Family & Life in recent weeks that the Irish Government plans to announce legislation later this year that will implement the anti-life recommendations of the discredited 2005 Commission on Assisted Human Reproduction.

The legislation is being drawn up by officials in Mary Harney’s Department of Health and Children and the signs are that it will seek to establish a regulatory body modelled on the “anything goes” British Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority.

The legislation would cover not only the assisted reproduction industry, but also the area of research involving human embryos. It appears that the Government sees an opportunity in the light of the Supreme Court’s decision in R vs. R (the frozen embryos case) to deny any legal protection whatsoever to un-implanted human embryos.

This would completely ignore the insistence of the Supreme Court that human embryos are deserving of protection and that the Oireachtas has a responsibility to provide this in law. Despite the fact that there is steadily growing evidence that embryonic stem cell research is a dead end (even the State of California which has thrown billions of dollars at these experiments is beginning to realise this), the small but influential embryo research lobby in Ireland refuses to acknowledge the facts.

Let’s be clear where this is leading. These people don’t just want permission to kill human embryos, they want government funding for it too. They want us to pay them to destroy innocent human lives. Many of our EU partners have laws that protect human embryos (at least to some extent). Ireland could easily follow the example of countries like Italy or Germany, if only our government had any regard for human life.

Thousands of people have signed our petition to Taoiseach Brian Cowen, demanding legislation that respects all human life. Those thousands represent many thousands more.

The Government should know that, if it does go down the path that it seems intent on, there will be a significant price to pay. Personal Update. May/June.
