Senators Call for Debate on Crisis Pregnancy Agency : 15th Mar 07
'Modus Operandi' of Crisis Pregnancy Agency Questioned by Senators
A prominent Irish Government Senator has called for a debate on the way the Crisis Pregnancy Agency (CPA) operates. Speaking in the Seanad (Senate), Fianna Fáil Senator Jim Walsh called for a debate on the “Crisis Pregnancy Agency and its modus operandi”.
Senator Walsh said he had received “reports and complaints from voluntary groups working hard in that area. These groups are finding it difficult simply because the CPA wishes them to deviate from their ethos." "That is unacceptable”, he pointed out.
Among a number of issues, the CPA has come in for widespread criticism in Ireland because of its promotion and distribution of the pro-abortion “Positive Options” leaflets which give abortion referral details.
The Senator’s call was supported by Senator Des Hanafin who said that “no group which stands for life (eg. Life/CURA) should be asked to give information on abortion referral. It is contrary to what it believes”.
He was referring to the fact the CPA, an Irish Government-appointed body, provides the funding for pro-life pregnancy counselling agencies such as CURA and LIFE, as well as agencies which give out abortion referral information. The pro-life organisations, in order to avail of funding, are requested by the CPA to promote the pro-abortion “Positive Options” leaflets.
Senator Hanafin said that “we in this House should defend the right of any group with an honest and clear mandate and ethos to uphold that ethos and not have anything forced upon it by liberal thinking”. The Irish Catholic. March 1. END.
