Bishop Calls on Irish Government to Increase Support for Family Life : 26th Aug 07

Government Needs to Facilitate Stay-at-Home Parents With Apprpriate Economic Incentives

According to an "Irish Catholic" newspaper editorial, Bishop Christopher Jones of the diocese of Elphin in Ireland “delivered a noteworthy speech on family life” in the course of a visit to the USA last week.

Fittingly, the talk was delivered at Girls and Boystown in Omaha, Nebraska. This was the place made famous by Fr Edward Flanagan and the film starring Spencer Tracey and Mickey Rooney, called “Boys Town”. Boystown was an attempt to create the atmosphere of a loving family for boys from troubled backgrounds. Bishop Jones said we must do our best to ensure that as many children as possible have the benefit of being raised in such families.

However, he pointed out that this isn’t always possible because of the priority our politicians here in Ireland give to the economy. He said one way to address this is for the Government to make it economically possible for more families to leave one spouse at home raising the children while they are still young.

Certainly, opined the "Irish Catholic" editorial, “we need a debate about how to create a more family-friendly society and our politicians need to take a leading role in the debate”. Bishop Jones’ talk is one step in that direction. The Irish Catholic. August 9.
