Lisbon Treaty Will Not Bring Abortion Claims Irish MEP : 31st Jan 08
"It is Still Exclusively up to the Irish People and Authorities to Decide any Change in the Law Relating to Abortion or Euthanasia”
Following the report in the “Irish Catholic” newspaper recently (Jan. 17) that a "Yes" vote in the forthcoming referendum on the “Reform Treaty” could allow abortion and euthanasia in Ireland, Irish MEP Brian Crowley challenged this claim.
He said that the “Protocol” which Ireland had included in the Maastricht Treaty and which is part of the “Reform Treaty”, entitled “Protocol on the Right to Life of the Unborn” states: “Nothing in the Treaty on European Union, or in the Treaties establishing the European Communities, or in the Treaties or Acts modifying or supplementing these Treaties, shall effect the application in Ireland of Art. 40.3.3 of the Constitution of Ireland.”
This means, according to Mr Crowley, “that there is no change to the law in Ireland, if we approve the Reform Treaty. It is still exclusively up to the Irish people and authorities to decide any change in the law relating to abortion or euthanasia.” The Irish Catholic. January 31.
