All Party Pro-life Group of the Northern Ireland Assembly Meets to Discuss... : 13th Feb 08

Northern Ireland Politicians Meet to Challenge Abortion Threat

Northern Ireland politicians from across the political spectrum attended a meeting at Stormont of the All Party Pro-life Group of the Northern Ireland Assembly, together with representatives of local and national pro-life groups. They met to discuss the Human Fertilisation and Embryology (HFE) Bill. This meeting was organised to inform politicians about the HFE Bill, and particularly its implications for Northern Ireland.

The HFE Bill fundamentally undermines the dignity and sanctity of human life, allowing human beings to be created and destroyed at will for experimentation. It is expected that some pro-abortion Westminster MPs will try to use the Bill to force changes to the abortion law in Northern Ireland.

Although abortion is not mentioned in the Bill, it will replace the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act - a piece of legislation that made significant changes to the 1967 Abortion Act. This could open up the entire 1967 Abortion Act for amendment and further liberalisation of the law including:

• abortion-on-demand within the first trimester without any doctors’ approval;

• abortions to be performed by nurses and midwives without any input from doctors;

• the removal of the conscience clause (which protects the position of doctors, nurses and ancillary personnel who do not wish to be involved in abortion);

• and all these changes to the Abortion Act to be extended to Northern Ireland.

On 22nd October 2007, an Assembly motion opposing any attempt to make abortion more widely available in Northern Ireland was passed. This represented the views of the majority of people here. It is vitally important that the Westminster Parliament acknowledge this clear message sent out from our Assembly. CLICK TO READ MORE.....
