67% Want to Have a Pro-Life Amendment to Restore Constitutional Protection for... : 4th Mar 08

“This finding is very encouraging and indicates strong support for the pro-life position”—“Restoring legal protection to the unborn child is necessary following the 1992 Supreme Court decision in the X Case"

A new opinion poll in Ireland, the results of which were published in “The Irish Times”, has found that 67% of Irish people would support a constitutional amendment to prohibit abortion.

The poll, carried out by Millward Brown/IMS on behalf of the Pro-Life Campaign (PLC), found that only 14% would oppose such a move.

The question asked whether voters would support such a move to ban abortion while allowing the continuation of the existing practice of intervention to save a mother’s life, in accordance with Irish medical ethics.

Dr Berry Kiely of the PLC, told the "Irish Catholic" , “This finding is very encouraging and indicates strong support for the pro-life position.” “Restoring legal protection to the unborn child is necessary following the 1992 Supreme Court decision in the X Case, which legalized abortion in potentially wide circumstances, even up to birth.”

She said that “while a referendum is necessary, it should only take place following a wide-ranging public discussion.” She added, “ There is at present a public debate taking place on the welfare and rights of children. Important questions are raised in this debate which range very widely, covering children of all ages up to adulthood. Clearly the context is a broad one, going well beyond issues relating to the protection of the welfare and rights of unborn children.”

Dr Kiely pointed to a new report from the UN on the safety of mothers during pregnancy. The report found that on all 171 countries for which estimates are given, Ireland is the safest country in the world in which to be pregnant.

Meanwhile, of those who expressed an opinion, 74% wanted the Dáil to act to legislate to prohibit experimentation on human embryos, while 25% opposed such legislation. The Irish Times, February 20. The Irish Catholic, February 21.
