CSO Abortion Classification Condemned : 6th May 08

"It is Clearly Not Their Function (the CSO) to Seek to Minimize the Gravity of Induced Abortion, Which Involves the Taking of Innocent Human Life”

The Pro-Life Campaign (PLC) has condemned plans by the Central Statistics Office (CSO) to change the classification of the crime of illegal abortion from ”homicide” to “miscellaneous offence”.

Speaking to "The Irish Catholic", John O’Reilly of the PLC said: “It is quite disturbing that the CSO found it fit to alter the present classification. It is clearly not their function to seek to minimize the gravity of induced abortion, which involves the taking of innocent human life.”

The CSO has developed a new classification system for criminal offences in close co-operation with An Garda Síochana (police force). The new Irish Crime Classification System (ICCS) lists the crime of assisting in abortion in the category of “miscellaneous”, along with other crimes such as concealment of birth, destroying of disposing of a dead body, pawnbroking of fences, rail travel offences, and employment permit and immigration offences.

Other changes to the classification of crimes include a description of drink-driving and speeding as “negligent acts”, while bigamy and prostitution are categorized as “public order and other social code offences”. Central Statistics Office (CSO). CLICK TO READ MORE.....
