CURA Four to Receive Apology : 1st Jun 08

CURA Volunteers Highlighted Pro-Abortion Positive Options Leaflets of the Crisis Pregnancy Agency

The Catholic Church’s crisis pregnancy agency, CURA, is set to make a public apology to four volunteer members, whom it dismissed over three years ago, according to an “Irish Catholic” newspaper report.

The apology, expected in the coming weeks, will clear the way for the expelled members to finally resume their work with the counselling service, from which they were expelled over their stated difficulties with the pro-abortion Positive Options leaflets as an access route for women seeking abortions.

The expulsions came following the submission of a letter by the CURA Four to the “Irish Catholic”, voicing their concerns in April 2005, interpreted by CURA as a breach of confidentiality as covered by their contracts of service.

In June 2005, however, as a result of the attention focussed on the Crisis Pregnancy Agency’s pro-abortion “Positive Options” literature, which CURA had agreed to distribute, the bishops re-considered the appropriateness of CURA distributing the leaflet and ordered its withdrawl.

The Hierarchy subsequently conceded that the CURA Four had been morally correct in voicing concerns about its content. It is understood that, as part of the agreement to reinstate the volunteers, they must not speak independently to the press. One key concern for the women was that Article 7 of CURA’s Service Agreement with the Crisis Pregnancy Agency was not in accordance with the pro-life ethos of the organisation.

However, under the terms of new deal, the volunteers are prepared to leave that concern to the care of the bishops. The CURA volunteers have been instructed that the bishops will take more of a lead in overseeing the work of CURA in future. The Irish Catholic. May 29.
