Ireland Must not Assume that Destructive Embryo Research Won’t Happen : 19th Jun 08

Call on Irish Government to Introduce Legislation to Protect the Embryo

According to an “Irish Catholic” newspaper reader, Máirtín Ó Maolruaidh, “most right-thinking people will be horrified to discover that the British Parliament has now approved the creation of human/animal hybrid embryos for the purposes of experimentation.

However, he noted, we in Ireland, while expressing our horror, “should not assume that such research could not occur here”. He pointed to the Irish Council for Bioethics (ICB), a body appointed by the Irish Government, has in its recent report “peddled the same vague and unsubstantiated arguments used in Britain to allow such research”.

The ICB has called for legislation to allow destructive human embryonic research, and stated on page 54 of its report, that the ICB “would have no principled objection to the creation of human-animal hybrid cell lines”.

Mr Ó Maolruaidh added, “I believe that the ICB or British model for respect for human life is not one that Ireland should follow.

The Irish Government should immediately introduce legislation to protect the human embryo, to ensure that at all times and in all stages of one’s life, the dignity of the human person is respected.” The Irish Catholic. May 29.
