CPA’s Abortion Claims Questioned : 14th Jul 08

"The downward trend, at a time when abortions in England and Wales are on the increase, proves that upward trends are not inevitable”

The Pro-Life Campaign (PLC) has questioned claims by the Crisis Pregnancy Agency (CPA) on figures for Irish women having abortions in The Netherlands. According to the latest UK abortion figures, which come from the UK’s Department of Health, and which the CPA challenged, the number of women travelling to Britain from abortions has fallen for the sixth consecutive year.

In 2007, 4,686 Irish women travelled to Britain for an abortion, down from 5,042 for the previous year. However, a spokeswoman for the CPA suggested that the decrease in these figures may be due, in part, to an increase in women travelling to The Netherlands.

A spokesman for the PLC told the “Irish Catholic”, “ The most recent official Dutch statistics on foreign abortions do not back up claims made by the Crisis Pregnancy Agency that there is a significant number of Irish women seeking abortions in The Netherlands. An organisation like the CPA, that prides itself on its research capability, should know better than to uncritically accept ‘statistics’ from dubious sources. It should use official statistics and not questionable figures provided by campaigning abortion clinics in Holland”, she said.

Welcoming the reduced figures for Irish abortions, the PLC spokeswoman said the downward trend, at a time when abortions in England and Wales are on the increase, “proves that upward trends are not inevitable”. The Irish Catholic. June 26.
