Fianna Fáil Senator Defends Traditional Marriage : 21st Jul 08

Senator Walsh Called for the Protection of the “Special Status” Enjoyed by Traditional Marriage in the Irish Constitution

Senator Jim Walsh of Fianna Fáil (main Irish Government political party) has promised a motion defending traditional marriage in the face of the new Civil Partnership Bill. The proposed legislation will allow same-sex and opposite sex couples to register cohabitation agreements in Ireland to regulate their joint financial affairs, giving them greater rights and control over pensions, inheritance and tax, etc.

At a Fianna Fáil parliamentary meeting in Leinster House, Senator Walsh called for the protection of the “special status” enjoyed by heterosexual marriage in the Irish Constitution.

In a statement issued before the meeting, the Wexford-based Senator said: “The motion fully accepts and acknowledges the need to address relevant issues pertaining to these relationships, but calls for the continuation of supports fro marriage, which are both unique and special, in accordance with the constitutional requirement.”

It is believed the that language of Senator Walsh’s motion was selected deliberately to make it clear that the signatories to not want to discriminate against same-sex couples in any way, but wish to focus on the need to maintain the special place of heterosexual couples.

Between a dozen and 30 members of the Fianna Fáil party are reported to have signed the motion. The Taoiseach (PM) has stated that the institution of marriage is “in no way affected” by the new Bill. The Irish Catholic. July 3.
