Pro-Abortion Movement on Move Again in Northern Ireland—Alliance for Choice... : 13th Aug 08
Pro-Abortion Alliance in Northern Ireland to Campaign for Abortion-on-Demand
In Northern Ireland the pro-abortion group Alliance for Choice Belfast was activated recently at a meeting in the Belfast Unemployed Resource Centre to work on a 3 month campaign leading up to UK MP Diane Abbot’s tabled amendment to the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Bill.
The amendment calls for the extension of the 1967 Abortion Act to Northern Ireland. The Bill is due to be debated and passed in the autumn.
According to Kellie O’Dowd of Alliance for Choice, “If the amendment is voted for it will mean that women in Northern Ireland will gain access to free, safe, legal abortion here 40 years after it’ introduction in the UK.”
The group started an “awareness campaign in the city centre on Saturday 16th August and plans to hold a public meeting on Tuesday 9th September (venue and speakers to be confirmed).
It also plans to “work closely with the Family Planning Association (FPA) (which has links to International Planned Parenthood Federation) to ensure the campaign is coherent and effective.” The next meeting will be on Tuesday 19th August @ 7pm in the Belfast Unemployed Resource Centre.
