‘Bleak Picture of Modern Britain’—Danger in a Mother’s Womb : 27th Aug 08

According to an “Irish Catholic” newspaper correspondent, Andy O’Callaghan, “Once more the abortion figures for 2007 in the UK make for depressing reading. With a total of 198,499 abortions recorded, this represents an increase of almost 5,800 over 2006.”

He noted that “we have groups today who strongly defend against any violation of human rights and this is commendable; yet the most fundamental and basic human right, the right to life itself is being denied to the unborn.”

He quoted a speech in the UK’s House of Commons recently where a Conservative Party MP, Edward Leigh stated: “In modern Britain the most dangerous place to be is in one’s mother’s womb, which should be a place of sanctity. Ninety-eight percent of abortions are social, 1.3% because of foetal handicap and 0.4% because of the risk to the mother’s life. It is a bleak picture of modern Britain.”

Andy O’Callaghan argued that “As Christian, these figures challenge all of us to support the pro-life movement and to pray for all those who may be considering having an abortion.” The Irish Catholic.
