Family & Life Appears Before Oireachtas Committee
As part of the Irish Government’s efforts to find a solution to the rejection of the Lisbon Treaty last June, it has set up the Sub-Committee on Ireland’s Future in the European Union to identify the various reasons why people voted against the treaty, and find a way forward. The committee was made up of seven TDs and five senators.
Family & Life’s David Manly appeared before the committee on Wednesday, November 12, for nearly an hour and a half during which he made a short presentation and replied to questions. He pointed out that many people feel justifiably disenfranchised by two things—the declared positions of certain EU departments and the Irish government’s perceived unwillingness to stand up for the values of our Constitution.
Over the past 10 years EU institutions have supported three causes—so-called “reproductive rights” including abortion, same-sex unions and destructive embryonic research—with little regard for the natural family and the sacredness of unborn life.
EU money is dispensed to groups supporting these causes, while pro-life and pro-family groups are ignored. The incontestable evidence for this is one reason why many voters rejected a treaty that would make the EU Commission, Parliament and Court of Justice stronger at the expense of national institutions.
David Manly told the committee that government ministers and civil servants should be proud of Ireland’s Constitution, and actively defend its values and articles in the EU and other international fora. If this were done consistently, voters would feel more secure about the country’s future in Europe.
