Women Told to Limit Caffeine During Pregnancy : 18th Nov 08
If an expectant mother consumes too much caffeine, her child could be underweight at birth, according to a recent study. A British government agency is expected to suggest that pregnant women should drink no more than two cups of coffee a day.
University researchers recorded 2,500 pregnant women's caffeine intake and found those consuming more than 200mg a day had smaller babies. The study is to be published in the British Medical Journal. Research published in the American Journal of Obstetrics & Gynaecology suggested that excess caffeine also increased the risk of miscarriage.
The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists recommends complete abstention from caffeine in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. Sunday Times.
