Aborted Mums Need Mental Health Care, Leading Irish Psychiatrist Says : 5th Jan 09
A prominent Irish psychiatrist has called for offering specific treatments to women who’ve had abortions, following the publication of new research linking abortion with subsequent mental health problems. The New Zealand study recently appeared in the British Journal of Psychiatry (See also “Women Deserve Better” on F& L website: CLICK TO READ MORE.....).
Patricia Casey, professor of adult psychiatry at University College Dublin and the Mater Hospital, Dublin, in an invited commentary published alongside the research, said abortionists had an obligation to inform pregnant mothers of the danger: “There are immediate medico-legal implications flowing from the finding; namely, the prospect of litigation against abortion providers for failing to provide women with information of a possible causal link between abortion and subsequent health problems”.
“The focus,” she concluded, “should be on identifying vulnerable groups of women and providing optimum treatment for them, whatever the aetiology of their mental health problems.” The Irish Times. December 2.
