14-Year-Olds to Learn about Their “Right” to an Abortion : 5th Jan 09
Schoolgirls in Britain and Northern Ireland as young as 14 might have to watch a film that says they have the right to choose an abortion. The film stresses that it’s up to a woman, and its producers assert that only a few mothers are left traumatised by an abortion.
“Why Abortion?” by the Family Planning Association (FPA) shows various scenarios in which actresses justify abortion by saying they can’t afford a child or that having a baby could jeopardise their relationship with parents or boyfriends.
The FPA says abortion is a fact of life, so it makes sense for teenagers to learn about it.
England and Wales has the second-highest abortion rate in Europe, with 205,600 babies aborted in 2007. Critics say schoolchildren should not be propagandised about abortion by a group that hides the psychological and physical dangers of abortion and ignores the rights of the unborn child.
Josephine Quintaville, a leading commentator on medical ethics and a member of the Pro-Life Alliance, argued, "I wouldn't trust the Family Planning Association to teach ethics. It is selling to schoolchildren the idea that women have a right to an abortion, that it's just one of those choices. If it's so unimportant, why is it still illegal?"
Norman Wells of the Family Education Trust added, “They are not doing women any favours by pretending that abortion is a simple and safe procedure that rarely leads to lasting trauma. The truth is that every abortion involves a personal tragedy for a mother and a child, which will have lasting consequences, whether immediately felt or not.” Telegraph.
