EU Money Behind Cork University Embryo-Killing Decision? : 9th Feb 09

Fr Brian McKevitt, OP, editor of the Irish family newspaper Alive!, says, “Cork University (UCC) authorities should study very carefully the recent Vatican document, Dignitas Personae (DP), especially paragraph 32.” It encourages research using adult stem cells, but rejects experiments that involve killing embryonic human beings.

“The obtaining of stem cells from a living human embryo invariably causes the death of the embryo”, says DP, “so it is gravely illicit. Research in such cases, irrespective of therapeutic results, is not truly at the service of humanity”.

And, the Church document states, “this research advances through the suppression of human lives that are equal in dignity to the lives of other human individuals”. Using these cells for experiments, even when they come from a commercial source, “presents serious problems from the standpoint of cooperation in evil and scandal”, says Fr McKevitt. “Why then has Cork University given the go-ahead for this evil work?”

“Could it have anything to do with money,” he asks, “especially EU money?” The EU currently provides €500 million for stem-cell research. Most goes to projects that present no moral problem, such as adult stem-cell research. But 18 projects that kill human embryonic stem cells are already getting funds, to the tune of €21 million. “Is this where the real attraction lies for Cork University?” wonders Fr McKevitt.

“In the wider view, should EU bosses be giving millions of euros to promote such evil research, and to devalue our sense of the dignity of the human person; should it be using tax-payers’ money in this way”? According to Fr McKevitt, “it is anti-life decisions like this that alienate millions of people from the European Union and make them very slow to transfer even more power to Brussels.” Alive!
