The Good Shepherd Fund 2008 Campaign
Family & Life founded the Good Shepherd Fund to help rescue abandoned children from the streets of Thailand and the Philippines. There are more than 75,000 street children in the Philippines alone. Thanks to our friends and supporters we have been able to help the nuns in the Philippines care for 32 children rescued from the streets! Thanks to your help in 2007, these rescued children, will be cleaned, fed, clothed, educated, and respected! Without the help of our supporters, these children would still be roaming the streets, and would face a very bleak future.
Prior to our assistance these children had a miserable life foraging for survival on the streets. They used a variety of strategies to survive: begging, stealing, picking through the rubbish for food and things they could sell for a few cents. Others polished shoes for pedestrians, or sold newspapers or cigarettes. Many of the street children used drugs to numb the pain of their hard life. Furthermore, sexual slavery and prostitution is a major threat.
When Family & Life started this annual Good Shepherd Fund project back in the 1990’s, many people asked what difference does it make to rescue a few children when over 100,000 children live on the streets. The answer is simple—your help certainly made a difference for the boy who will soon finish his secondary school education; you certainly made a difference for the three children who are now studying to become engineers; you certainly made a difference to the child who wants to become a nurse.
The children cannot thank our friends and supporters enough for giving them an opportunity to escape poverty!
