Achieving the Impossible

Eva Mozes Kor who died on July 4 this year, was one of two twins, both of whom survived nine months in the Auschwitz death camp. On arrival there in the spring of 1944, the twins were sent to the special unit of Dr Josef Mengele,
nicknamed the Angel of Death. In the name of “medical research” Mengele injected his victims with various diseases, and Kor, despite suffering raging fevers, resolved to fight her sickness and avoid collapse, usually a one-way ticket to the gas chamber. Both she and her sister Miriam survived the atrocious conditions and medical torture. Before she died at the age of 85, she wrote a letter in which she forgave Mengele and the Nazis, telling the world, “It will heal your soul. It will set you free.”
