Relatively Few GPs Sign Up to do Abortions

17.01.2019

About 200 of Ireland’s 3,500 GPs have signed up to provide abortions. A disproportionate number of these are in Dublin, but most counties have at least one doctor who has agreed to provide abortions during the first nine weeks of pregnancy.

The HSE says its ‘My Options’ telephone and website service, which provides information and support for those affected by crisis pregnancies, has received a steady stream of calls since January 1. The HSE does not provide details of GPs or clinics who provide abortion on its website, but offers this information to women who request it through the helpline.

One doctor, who signed up to provide abortions, claims to have seen five women in one day during the first week of the month.

The HSE has budgeted €12m for abortions in 2019.
