2 Abortions on Suicide Grounds in 2017

29.06.2018

Two abortions were performed in Ireland last year under the suicide clause of the 2013 abortion legislation. A further thirteen pregnancies were terminated for medical reasons, the official figures show.

The annual report on the Protection of Life During Pregnancy Act showed eight pregnancies were terminated due to physical illness and five were carried out in a medical emergency. One woman, who was initially turned down for an abortion, had a review and the original decision was overturned.

The total figure marks a considerable fall compared to previous years. In 2016 there were 26 pregnancies terminated under the Act, with one abortion due to the cited risk of suicide. In 2015 the total number was also 26.
