A Voice Silenced: Politicians deny the public their say on Maria Steen Presidential Nomination

24.09.2025

It is with deep disappointment that we share the news that Maria Steen, a courageous and principled voice for life and family, will not appear on the ballot in the upcoming presidential election. Despite tireless efforts and widespread public support, Maria secured 18 nominations from Oireachtas members—just two shy of the required 20 to enter the race.

This outcome highlights a troubling flaw in our democratic process. When access to candidacy is restricted by political gatekeeping, the people are denied the opportunity to choose a President who truly represents their values, instead pioliticians decided to make that choice over the people. With only three candidates now in the running—none of whom support offering human rights to the unborn—we face an election devoid of meaningful choice for voters.

Maria Steen has long been a champion of human dignity and constitutional protection for the most vulnerable. Her pivotal role in defeating the deeply flawed “Family” and “Care” referendums in 2024, particularly her defeat of Michael Martin in the final TV debate was a testament to her clarity, conviction, and ability to articulate the beliefs and feelings of ordinary citizens against elite-driven agendas. She stood firm when others wavered, and Ireland is better for it.

Though she will not be on the ballot, Maria’s impact endures. Her campaign sparked vital conversations and debates over having broader choice for the electorate on the presidential ballot paper.
