Ann Widdecombe: A Fearless Voice for the Right to Life and Free Speech
15.07.2026

The pro-life movement this week bids farewell to a very courageous and recognisable champions with the passing of Ann Widdecombe.
At this difficult time, our thoughts and prayers are with Ann’s family, friends and all those who mourn her loss. Behind the public figure was a lady of faith whose passing will leave an immeasurable void in the lives of those who knew and loved her.
For decades, Ann stood unapologetically for the sanctity of human life from conception to natural death. In an era when defending the unborn often invited ridicule, hostility or exclusion from public life, she remained steadfast in her convictions and refused to be silenced. Her voice gave encouragement to countless others who shared those beliefs but lacked her platform or her courage.
She was equally resolute in defending freedom of expression and the right to dissent from prevailing orthodoxies. Ann warned repeatedly against the narrowing of acceptable opinion and challenged attempts to marginalise those holding traditional or unpopular views. Whether one agreed with her or not, few could deny her willingness to stand publicly by principle rather than bend to fashion.
Ann Widdecombe belonged to a generation of public figures who believed that convictions were not to be hidden but defended.
The causes of right to life and free speech have lost a formidable advocate, but her example will continue to inspire many for years to come.
May she rest in peace.
