Belfast City Hall Set to Shine Green for Abortion Campaign

Belfast City Council is preparing to illuminate City Hall green on 28 September in support of an international abortion campaign. The move was backed at committee level by councillors from Sinn Féin, Alliance, the SDLP and the Green Party, with DUP representatives voting against. Supporters describe the gesture as solidarity with a Europe‑wide initiative, but it overlooks the unresolved democratic issues surrounding abortion legislation in Northern Ireland.

The most striking element is Sinn Féin’s enthusiastic support for the illumination. Sinn Féin were key cheerleaders when Westminster imposed abortion laws on Northern Ireland in 2019, and the public had no opportunity to vote on the matter. Celebrating this legislation which removed the pro born baby's human rights now, through symbolic displays, only reinforces how the will of Northern Irish voters was bypassed and how a deeply sensitive issue was decided without local consent.

Concerns have also resurfaced over proposed council byelaws aimed at restricting graphic imagery and limiting pro‑life expression in the city centre. These contradictory measures risk silencing legitimate viewpoints at a time when democratic accountability is already in question.

As City Hall prepares to shine green, pro‑life residents see the display not as progress, but as a reminder of a decision made over their heads on a matter celebrating death of babies and a political establishment still unwilling to acknowledge that Northern Ireland never got its say.
