Belgium Faces Pressure to Extend Abortion Limit as European Countries Relax Restrictions

06.11.2026

Belgium is facing renewed pressure to extend its legal abortion limit from 12 to 18 weeks, amid growing concerns over the continued erosion of protections for unborn children across Europe.

As reported by LifeSiteNews, more than a dozen organisations are urging the Belgian government to liberalise its abortion legislation, citing a poll suggesting that 54% of Belgians support extending the current limit.

Belgium currently permits abortion on request up to 12 weeks, subject to a six-day waiting period. While campaigners are demanding an extension to 18 weeks, the coalition government has so far indicated that it would consider extending the limit only to 14 weeks.

The campaign follows a wider European trend. Since 2019, Iceland, France, North Macedonia, Denmark and Norway have increased their abortion limits, while France and Luxembourg have taken steps to give abortion constitutional protection.

Supporters of the Belgian proposals argue that approximately 400 women travel annually to the Netherlands for abortions beyond Belgium’s existing legal limit.

However, pro-life advocates warn that extending abortion limits would further undermine protections for developing human life.

By 12 weeks, an unborn child has recognisable facial features, developing reflexes, and clearly formed fingers and toes.

The debate raises fundamental questions about the direction EU countries pushing radical abortion policies on to others, particularly as advances in prenatal medicine continue to reveal more about human development before birth.

The central concern remains whether governments will extend legal protections to unborn children or continue removing them.
