Anita Meston, 63, was teaching at Biddick Academy in Sunderland when a 12- or 13-year-old student asked whether she supported abortion during a history lesson in March 2025.

Meston explained that her Christian faith and conversations with women who regretted abortions had shaped her opposition to the practice. She also allowed another pupil to express a different opinion.

However, following a student complaint, the school terminated her employment, citing rules restricting teachers from expressing personal views in classrooms.

Meston, who is pursuing an employment tribunal claim with support from Alliance Defending Freedom UK, insists she was answering a direct question rather than attempting to impose her beliefs.

“I am profoundly shocked by Biddick Academy’s decision to dismiss me for my faith-based, pro-life beliefs,” she said.

She argued that genuine tolerance must extend to those holding beliefs others may disagree with.

ADF UK lawyer Jeremiah Igunnubole warned that dismissing teachers over sincerely held convictions risks teaching young people that silencing opposing viewpoints is acceptable.

The case raises wider questions about religious freedom, freedom of expression and whether teachers can openly acknowledge their personal convictions when questioned by students.

The tribunal will consider Meston’s allegations of discrimination.
