Doctors Want Limited Numbers Doing Abortions

12.07.2018

A specific number of specially trained GPs, rather than a widespread group, should be designated to provide medical abortions, a doctors’ leader has urged. Dr Maitiu O Tuathail, president of the National Association of General Practitioners, said that a limited group of GPs could build up expertise in providing abortions.

Minister Simon Harris said the proposed abortion legislation would provide abortion on a universal basis, so that cost was not a barrier, but the government has yet to discuss its implementation with GPs.

The government’s intention is to make the new abortion services available in January, Mr Harris said. The legislation would compel a doctor with a conscientious objection to abortion to refer a woman to an abortionist.
