Dáil Rejects Pain Relief Bill

17.12.2021

As you will have read from our emails the Foetal Pain Relief bill was debated and voted on yesterday in Dáil Éireann. The bill introduced by Deputy Carol Nolan, sought to bring to an end the cruel practice of forcing a child to go through unnecessary pain in late term abortions.

The bill was also co-sponsored by other TDs, Peadar Tóibín, Peter Fitzpatrick, Noel Grealish, Éamon Ó Cuív, Seán Canney, Michael Collins, Richard O’Donoghue, Danny Healy-Rae, Michael Healy-Rae and Mattie McGrath.

Sadly the Dáil rejected a second reading of the Bill yesterday evening, and a Government counter motion was passed by 107 votes to 36.

Deputy Carol Nolan had this to say. “It hasn’t come as a huge surprise though and we will certainly not be deterred by it. The bill we are putting forward is a measured and humane proposal. It simply seeks to ensure that unborn babies are given pain relief prior to late-term abortions,”

Aontú Leader, Peadar Tóibín remarked about the cruelty and lack of compassion to "completely ignore the humanity of these living individual human beings.”

It is hard to believe in 2021 that this subject could even be up for debate. It shouldn't have to take any persuasion on something as clear cut as this. It is horrifying that such a large number of politicians would prevent pre-born children from being given pain relief in the violent, agonising procedure that is late term abortion. This would be a simple amendment to the Abortion Law that was brought in as a result of the Repeal vote in 2018. These same politicians campaigned for abortion in 2018 while telling us that we should "vote yes for compassion". They are morally bankrupt when they not only use the word "compassion" in killing a child but when they also put their names to a vote that denies those same pre born children pain relief.

It is up to us to remind those politicians that they won't have our votes when they dehumanise our most innocent in such a barbaric way. We must now make an extra effort to encourage all those we know to move their votes to pro life politicians and pro life parties.
