EU-Backed Government in Moldova Accused of Suppressing Christian Values and Silencing Dissent

03.10.2025

In Moldova, Europe’s most Christian and socially conservative nation, citizens are sounding the alarm over what they describe as an aggressive campaign to impose progressive social policies—backed by the EU and enforced by the pro-EU government of President Maia Sandu.

Since taking office in 2020, Sandu’s administration has allegedly used authoritarian tactics to push pro-LGBT policies on a population that overwhelmingly opposes them. Moldova, where 95% of citizens identify as Orthodox Christians, has long resisted leftist ideologies such as abortion and gender ideology. But activists and clergy now report surveillance, media suppression, border harassment, and intimidation of religious leaders who speak out.

One of the most troubling developments is the EU-funded effort to sideline Moldova’s centuries-old Orthodox Church in favor of a liberal alternative, the Metropolis of Bessarabia. Priests who switch allegiance reportedly receive salaries up to four times higher, while those who remain loyal face threats and restrictions.

Pro-family activists say public opposition to LGBT ideology has been stifled. Before 2021, counter-protests to pride parades often outnumbered participants tenfold. Today, even peaceful demonstrators risk detention and harassment.

Locals also report politicization in youth programs, with LGBT inclusion prioritized over merit. One father described his child’s experience at a government-sponsored music camp where less-qualified participants were allegedly chosen for ideological reasons.

Despite Moldova’s candidate status for EU membership, Brussels remains silent on these alleged civil rights violations. Critics argue the EU is actively funding efforts to erode Moldova’s traditional values, leaving its citizens caught between their faith and a government increasingly hostile to it.
