EU Proposal Risks Undermining National Protections for Unborn Children

18.02.2026

A significant decision is looming in Brussels as the European Commission prepares to rule on the “My Voice My Choice” initiative. At first glance, the proposal is framed as expanding “access” to healthcare. In reality, it would create an EU‑funded system enabling women to travel across borders for abortions that are illegal or restricted in their own countries paid for by taxpayers from all 27 Member States.

If adopted, this mechanism would allow someone who has passed her country’s legal time limit whether 12, 14, or 22 weeks to travel to a more permissive jurisdiction, such as the Spain, with EU financial support. Likewise, a woman in Poland seeking an abortion on grounds not permitted under Polish law could travel to Belgium and have the trip subsidised by EU funds.

The consequences would be profound. National laws, debated and enacted through democratic processes, would be effectively hollowed out. Any Member State attempting to maintain safeguards for unborn children would find its legislation undermined by an EU‑backed workaround. Instead of respecting subsidiarity the principle that decisions should be made as close as possible to citizen this initiative would pressure every country to conform to the most permissive abortion regimes in Europe.

This is not a neutral administrative proposal. It is a political effort to reshape Europe’s moral landscape using taxpayers’ money.

At this critical moment, your voice matters. Please contact your MEPs and urge them to oppose any attempt to use EU funds to facilitate abortions. You should also write to Ireland’s own EU Commissioner, Michael McGrath, who holds the portfolio for Democracy, Justice, the Rule of Law and Consumer Protection, and express your strong opposition to allocating EU taxpayers’ money to finance abortion travel.
