Nigeria’s Catholic School Abduction Sparks Global Outcry

02.12.2025

The Christian community continues to grapple with the shocking abduction of more than 300 students and staff from St. Mary’s Catholic boarding school in Papiri, Niger State. The attack, which occurred on November 24, has been described as one of the worst kidnappings in Nigeria’s history.

Initial reports suggested 52 children were taken, but authorities later confirmed that 315 students and 12 teachers were forced away by armed men riding dozens of motorcycles. Witnesses recounted the brutality, with children beaten when they stumbled during the forced march.

In the days following the attack, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) announced that 50 students managed to escape and have since reunited with their families. Despite this glimmer of hope, hundreds remain missing, prompting urgent calls for action.

Pope Leo appealed from St. Peter’s Square for the immediate release of the hostages, urging leaders to act decisively. The Sisters of Our Lady of Apostles, who oversee the school, have asked believers worldwide to join in prayer for the safe return of those still held captive.

The abduction is part of a disturbing rise in violence against Christians. Just days earlier, gunmen stormed a church in Kwara State, killing two and kidnapping several worshippers. Another attack targeted a Muslim girls’ school, underscoring the widespread insecurity.

International voices have weighed in. U.S. Ambassador Mike Waltz labeled the persecution of Christians in Nigeria “genocide wearing the mask of chaos,” while the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom urged stronger action against state-backed violence.

As Nigeria’s government scrambles to respond, believers worldwide are reminded of the power of united prayer. In the words of Sr. Mary Barron: “May God, in His infinite mercy, protect the innocent and bring all those taken back home safely.”
