Only FF TD to Support Soc Dem Abortion Bill Appointed Minister of State by Micheál Martin

10.06.2026

Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin’s decision to appoint TD Catherine Ardagh as Minister of State at the Department of Justice has drawn renewed scrutiny, as she was the only Fianna Fáil TD to support the recent Social Democrats bill seeking to remove the life saving three‑day reflection period which would lead to the deaths or thousands more babies who would otherwise live. The bill was rejected by a strong Dáil majority, with 85 TDs voting against it.

Critics argue that the appointment continues a pattern in which party members who favour expanded abortion access are elevated to senior roles. They also point to Ireland’s rising abortion figures, nearly 11,000 in the latest annual report, as an issue that remains unaddressed at leadership level.

The three‑day waiting period is not a symbolic measure but a practical safeguard. Hundreds of women each year do not proceed with an abortion after the reflection period, meaning the pause has directly contributed to saving lives. Removing it would eliminate one of the few protections still in place for unborn children.

These concerns have led some to question whether the leadership’s direction reflects the views of Fianna Fáil’s broader membership or the wider public.
