People Before Profit Fail in Attempt to Erase Human Rights Protections for the Unborn

17.12.2025

An extraordinary and deeply troubling bill was brought before the Dáil this week, spearheaded by People Before Profit. The proposal sought to strip away every last legal protection for unborn children, effectively decriminalising abortion right up until the moment of birth.

The bill was framed as progressive, but its reality was stark: it attempted to erase the most basic human rights of the most vulnerable members of society. This legislation represented one of the most extreme positions ever advanced in the Irish parliament.

When the matter was raised in the Dáil on Tuesday, Deputy Peadar Tóibín of Aontú stood firm and demanded that the proposal be put to a vote. His courage ensured that the issue was not quietly brushed aside. This evening, that vote took place. In a dramatic outcome, the bill was defeated—but only by a narrow margin of just two votes.

The closeness of the result should serve as a wake-up call. It reveals how fragile the protections for unborn children have become, and how determined some factions are to remove them entirely.

This episode underscores the urgent need for vigilance. The attempt to delete all remaining human rights for the unborn shows how far some are willing to go. The pro-life movement must remain steadfast, ensuring that the dignity and humanity of every child are recognised and protected.
