Fr. Thomas Oyode, rector of the Immaculate Conception Minor Seminary in Nigeria’s Auchi Diocese, has been freed after being held captive for 10 days. His release, which occurred on the evening of November 6, was confirmed in a statement issued by the Diocese on November 7.
Fr. Peter Egielewa, the Diocese’s Communications Director, shared the relief and gratitude of Bishop Gabriel Ghiakhomo Dunia and the wider Catholic community. “The Catholic Diocese of Auchi announces the safe release of Rev. Fr. Thomas Oyode from his captors,” he said. The Bishop extended his appreciation to all who offered prayers, support, and assistance during the ordeal, including local security forces, vigilantes, and hunters who tirelessly searched for the priest.
Fr. Oyode was abducted on October 27 during an attack on the seminary in Edo State's Etsako East Local Government Area. The assailants stormed the premises during evening prayers, prompting most students to flee. Reports indicate that Fr. Oyode intervened to protect two students who had been captured, offering himself in their place.
The incident is part of a troubling pattern of violence in Nigeria, where kidnappings for ransom and other criminal activities have been on the rise. The Diocese used this occasion to urge the government to address security challenges in the Edo North region, ensuring residents can live and travel safely.
Fr. Oyode’s case is yet another example of the ongoing risks faced by clergy in Nigeria. Several priests have been abducted in recent months, some of whom remain missing. This includes Fr. Emmanuel Azubuike of the Okigwe Diocese, who was kidnapped on November 5.
Northern Nigeria continues to grapple with widespread insecurity fueled by militant groups namely the Fulani and criminal gangs, exacerbating the challenges faced by communities across the country.
