Webinar: Can Governments Take Suicide Prevention Seriously While Advocating for Assisted Suicide?

01.09.2026

As Westminster prepares once again to debate legalising assisted suicide, we are honoured to announce a special webinar with leading consultant psychiatrist Professor Patricia Casey.

Thursday, 10 September
7.30pm

The timing could not be more important. The Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill is scheduled for its Second Reading in the House of Commons the following morning, Friday, 11 September.

At the heart of our webinar is a question which advocates of assisted suicide must confront:

How can governments tell one group of vulnerable people that suicide must always be prevented, while creating a legal pathway for another group to be assisted in ending their lives?

Professor Casey brings considerable experience to this discussion. A Consultant Psychiatrist and Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry at UCD, her academic work has included research into suicide and attempted suicide, alongside an extensive career in clinical psychiatry.

Last year, former Prime Minister Theresa May crystallised the contradiction during the assisted-suicide debate in Westminster:

“As a society, we believe that suicide is wrong. The Government have a national suicide prevention strategy.”

Her conclusion was unequivocal:

“Suicide is not okay. Suicide is wrong. This (Assited Suicide) Bill is wrong. It should not pass.”

At a time when tremendous work is being done by suicide-prevention organisations to convince people that every life has value and that suicide is never the answer, what message is sent when the State itself begins facilitating suicide in certain circumstances?

Join us for an important one-to-one conversation with Prof Patricia Casey examining assisted suicide, suicide prevention, vulnerability and the consequences of changing the law.

Register here today to save your place — and please share this webinar with your family, friends and contacts. Help us get this important conversation to as many people as possible.
