Westminster’s Tragic Step Toward Assisted Suicide
20.06.2025
A dark day has unfolded across the water in Westminster as MPs in the House of Commons voted to advance the Assisted Dying Bill, a law that would permit medical professionals to assist in ending the lives of terminally ill adults. The bill passed by 314 votes to 291, and now moves to the House of Lords, with little standing in its way of becoming law.
This moment marks a heartbreaking shift — not just legally, but morally. The UK Labour Government has backed legislation that redefines care, turning medicine from a healing profession into one that can now be tasked with facilitating death.
This bill sends a devastating message to the elderly, the disabled, and the vulnerable: that their lives may be seen as a burden. It creates the perfect conditions for coercion, where people already struggling with illness, isolation or mental health could feel pressured to see death as their only option.
It's a chilling contradiction that while governments pour resources into suicide prevention campaigns, they now introduce laws that encourage suicide under the guise of compassion. The very people who need support, empathy, and palliative care are instead offered the terrifying option to end their own lives — legally, and potentially under pressure.
As Christians, we are called to protect life and accompany those who suffer with dignity and love — not by ending their lives, but by walking with them in their final days. Today’s decision shows just how far society has drifted from that calling. The slippery slope is no longer theoretical. It has begun.
We must continue to speak up — for life, for compassion, and for true care.
