ZERO SEATS: Labour Wiped Out in UK Council Covering Kim Leadbeater’s Constituency After Assisted‑Suicide Bill Fallout

14.05.2026

Labour has been completely wiped out in Kirklees District Council in the UK, the local authority that contains the parliamentary constituency of Kim Leadbeater, the MP who spearheaded the UK’s recent assisted‑suicide Bill. Once the largest party on the council with 23 seats, Labour now holds none, marking one of the most dramatic local collapses seen in the UK’s recent political landscape.

The result follows only weeks after the assisted‑suicide Bill’s failure in the House of Lords. Although the Bill passed its Third Reading in the UK House of Commons in 2025, support had already weakened sharply, dropping from a 55‑vote majority at Second Reading to just 23. Polling by Whitestone Insight later suggested that fewer than half of UK MPs would reliably back similar legislation today, with 45% saying they would vote against it.

The Kirklees wipeout formed part of wider UK‑wide losses for Labour in the 7 May 2026 local elections. The party lost 1,496 council seats in England, four in Scotland, and 35 in the Welsh Senedd. Commentators have noted that Labour remains deeply divided on assisted‑suicide policy, with 224 Labour MPs voting for the Bill and 160 voting against it at Third Reading.

While interpretations differ, the complete loss of Labour representation in the UK council covering Leadbeater’s constituency has drawn significant attention, particularly among groups concerned about end‑of‑life legislation.
