In Ireland today, babies in the womb undergoing late-term abortion are given no pain relief. It is a hidden cruelty that few politicians will even acknowledge. Yet every medical professional knows that unborn children feel pain. When an unborn baby requires surgery in the womb, both mother and child are given anaesthesia. But during abortion, compassion disappears. The child is left to suffer in silence.

In 2021, Carol Nolan TD introduced the Foetal Pain Relief Bill, a compassionate measure to ensure unborn babies receive pain relief during late-term abortions. Instead of welcoming the bill, most TDs rejected it. The Minister for Health dismissed it, opposition leaders ridiculed it, and 103 TDs voted it down. As a result, babies continue to endure unimaginable suffering.

Family & Life is determined not to let this silence continue. That is why we have launched a national campaign to reintroduce the Pain Relief Bill and awaken Ireland’s conscience. This is a campaign rooted in truth, powered by volunteers, and guided by faith.

Here are some of the ways this project is unfolding:

• Raising Awareness Online
  High-impact videos and visuals are being produced for social media, confronting the public with the stark reality: unborn babies are denied pain relief during abortion.

• Nationwide Leaflet Distribution
  Thousands of leaflets are being printed and distributed through volunteers, parishes, and prayer groups—ensuring that the truth reaches every community in Ireland.

• Webinars and Local Talks
  Monthly online webinars and in-person talks are informing, equipping, and mobilising people of goodwill across the country.

• Constituency Lobbying
  Volunteers are being trained and resourced to meet TDs and Senators face-to-face, ensuring no public representative can claim ignorance of this ongoing cruelty.

This campaign is about exposing a grave injustice and making Ireland face the truth. It is also about following Pope Saint John Paul II’s teaching in Evangelium Vitae: when a law cannot yet be overturned, it is licit—and necessary—to work for measures that limit its harm.
